It is absolutely clear to me the meaning of “all together”, but I can’t figure out the meaning and how to use the word “altogether”. Can I get a clear example?
“Altogether” may be used in different contexts:
1. I don’t altogether understand why he behaves this way.
Or
She’s altogether angry with me.
In these sentences “altogether” means “completely, entirely” or if it’s negative “at all“.
So, next time when you want to say something like: “She is completely / absolutely distracted at lessons”, you may as well say: “She is altogether distracted at lessons”.
Or if you intend to say: “I cannot play hockey at all”, you may as well say: “I cannot altogether play hockey”.
2. Another meaning of this word is “overall, on the whole, in total“. For example: Altogether, they are a lovely couple.
Altogether, we spent a great time on holiday in Spain.
You owe me 25 dollars altogether.
