Which preposition is used with ‘advice’ and ‘suggestion’, on or about?

Do I say: He gave me advice on how to loose weight. Or: He gave me advice about how to loose weight?

Both are fine. There is a slight difference in meaning between “on” and “about”, which apply for both advice and suggestion.

On” is used when we are giving recommendations on a specific topic or issue whereas “about” apply for a more general recommendations on different topics.

In general, “on” is a lot more used and sounds more natural than “about”.

Example: Could you give me a piece of advice on how to improve my English speaking skills? Could you give me some advice about effective ways of English learning?

Example: She gave some suggestions on which dress to choose for the wedding party. Do you have any suggestions about how to dress elegantly?
